Help!!

I am hopeless with sewing machines! And it drives me crazy! I read the manual over and over again, I google search, I cry, I scream and then I go to bed in a huff!
Seriously I don't know where I go wrong!

I am trying to zig- zag stitch and my machines upper thread keeps snapping! The tension has been up, down and round about, the needle changed, the bobbin re wound....same problem, missed stiches and then SNAP! ARRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

So I retreat happily to hand sewing, my heart sighs a heavy sigh of relief!
(jam jar toppers....can be adapted for any jam/ chutney/ pickle/ preserve type!! Be proud of your jar of captured summer! They come with elastic band and length of ribbon to tie in preeeeeety bow! Gorgeous jam!)

Can anyone help?

Mine does it too....wonder why!?

Olly thinks its because its only a little machine....and I make it work too hard...it went through 3 layers the other day making some curtains for my Sister...I swear I could hear it panting!!!!!

There are such a lot of ladies on here who are a whizz on a machine, they are bound to have the righr answer!

The jam jar topper is so cute!
Have a great week...is it raining near you?
Chucking it down here...I was thinking about a walk up to Platt Fields today as well...ho hum!xxx

Two thoughts if you have already tried adjusting tension: have you cleaned out any crap under the bobbin case and the other one is: are you using the same thread on the top and bottom, because i had similar problem once when i used two roughly the same colours, but one was a different make from the other and was more "slidey". They are beautiful covers, but DON'T sell yourself short.... they are worth more . . good luck. x

Hello!
what type of machine have you got sweet?
Also I know you said about tension - are you also changing the 'tension' as it were on your bobbin case? you do this with a wee screwdriver? ;0 X

I have literally tried everything including hoovering the bobbin inside!! but maybe it is the thread?!

Hmmmmm..........
How old and how long have you had your machine? When was the last time it had a service?? ;0

its less than a year, but it is one of those mini janome ones so maybe it is just rubbish!

Princess B did a Stitch Club class with those mini Janomes and the teacher was very uncomplimentary - she said they were not great for anything more than the kiddy stuff. Is it heavy fabric, or lots of layers - are you using the right needle? What sort of thread - cheap thread or overlocker thread are not so strong as normal sewing cotton. (Jar toppers definitely too cheap for such beautiful work - just think of the cost of materials, and how long it takes you to make.)

pomona, I think you are right about sewing machine, I read some very uncomplimentary comments about it on one comparison site! Looks like I will have to save up a little and get a decent one! What do you have? x

I now have a Husqvarna Rose - for years I struggled with a very basic Brother but I am not very good with anything at all mechanical. The Rose is a sealed unit - no oiling - drop-in bobbin (no fiddly threading), lots of pretty stitches, automatic buttonhole. It transformed my life, and makes things like bag handles much easier. It also makes up for all my deficiencies on the skill front!

I wish I knew, but I'm only a novice sew-er. So far I've been getting through with giving Emmy a little bit of love, reading the FAQs and hoping for a LOT of luck!

On the plus side those jam toppers look good enough to eat!

I said it before.... and I'll say it again........... you are selling them too cheap...... trust me.... :O) x

Mrs B said...

hee hee!! Cathy I turn to you for an honest word! what would you pay for them? I don't trust MrB's judgment!! x

The way I look at it... look at the fabric used, the time spent sewing...... also take into account the minimum wage..... (and much as I hate to say it, that is usually paid to unskilled workers)..... just "think on, Bonnie Lassie..." x

I'm with everyone else on the jam jar toppers!! They look lovely. Do you have a good sewing machine shop nearbym they might be able to give some advice about the pesky ziz zag thread. I'm about to invest in something that does more than straight lines, but hesitating as hand sewing feels so much nicer.

Have you noticed if your top thread spools off the bobbin and tightens underneath it around the spindle? This sometimes happens to me and its hards to spot.
if it happens a lot you can put a thick piece of felt under the bobbob onto the spindle first.
(I just popped in here from meplusmolly and found this sad little post.So I thought I had to put my twopennorth in.Hope it helps.)
